Having been a member of the American Society of Church History for just under half of its total history and having had the privilege of serving as its president in 1965, I am honored by the invitation to contribute this Foreword to the distinguished collection of essays by my friends and colleagues, and in the process to lay my own wreath at the monument to the genius of Philip Schaff.
Lotz On Friday evening, 23 March 1888, seventeen academics and churchmen assembled in New York City with a view to forming a professional society for the study of ecclesiastical history. They had come together at the invitation of the Reverend Dr. Philip Schaff (181993), long the most widely known and respected Protestant church historian in North America and, at the time, Washburn Professor of Church History in New York's Union Theological Seminary. Meeting at Schaff's home in midtown Manhattan and joined in spirit by forty colleagues who had communicated ''their regret at necessary absence and their desire to become members of the proposed society," the group unanimously resolved to establish such a society, adopted a constitution, and elected its officers, including Schaff as president.
