Another aspect of the mimicking of the Stalin regime in Russia was the use of political terror—purges, arrests, show trials and executions—to maintain the communist grip on politics and society. Needless to say, the east European regimes were also ‘Stalinist’—totally loyal and obedient to the Soviet dictator personally. The communisation, sovietisation and Stalinisation of eastern Europe did not take place according to a single timetable. Even before the Cominform conference, the process of transforming people’s democracy into full-blown communist regimes was far advanced in several 28 COEXISTENCE, REVOLUTION AND THE COLD WAR countries (Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Romania), while in others (Poland, Hungary and East Germany) there were already distinct tendencies in that direction.

These developments signalled the breakdown of the Grand Alliance relationship and the onset of the cold war. After the Cominform conference of European communist parties in September 1947 an antiAmerican campaign was launched by communists in western Europe. In eastern Europe the Soviet and communist grip on the region was extended radically. All opposition to communist rule was crushed, followed by the launch of programmes for the rapid introduction of Soviet-style socialism. Allied negotiations over the future of Germany broke down, leading to the establishment of separate East and West German states and their respective integration into Soviet and COEXISTENCE, REVOLUTION AND THE COLD WAR 15 western military-political blocs.

In Hungary in 1956, internal political convulsions within the communist party sparked off a popular revolt against communist rule and Soviet domination. In 1960, Albania sided with China in the Sino-Soviet dispute. In the mid-1960s Romania adopted a series of domestic and foreign policies designed to assert its difference and autonomy from the rest of the Soviet bloc. In 1968, an attempt by the leadership of the Czechoslovak communist party to replace Soviet-style socialism with a more liberal, home-grown version was crushed by Soviet tanks.
